JONATHAN GOLDMAN
38
Executive director
Illinois Environmental Council
Legislators in Springfield perked up earlier this year when Jonathan Goldman helped rescue two land preservation programs from the state's chopping block.
Mr. Goldman led Partners for Parks and Wildlife, a group of more than 130 environmental and outdoor recreation organizations, to fight Gov. Rod Blagojevich's proposed suspension of two programs that buy land and protect parks. The governor wanted to use the money instead to help balance the budget, but thousands of letters and phone calls flooded the Capitol, persuading state leaders to keep the financing, $30 million from a real estate tax, in place.
In his three years at the Illinois Environmental Council, a Springfield-based non-partisan umbrella group of 40 organizations, Mr. Goldman has more than doubled the budget, now $300,000, and built the staff from one just himself to six.
"The (council) needed a shot in the arm, and Jonathan has reinvigorated it," says Howard Learner, executive director of the Environmental Law and Policy Center, who works with Mr. Goldman on legislation.
In 1998, Mr. Goldman helped pass laws and fund lead-abatement projects in his role as head of the Lead Elimination Action Drive. His next goal: a law to protect wetlands in Illinois counties that don't already have rules. The bill, stalled for four years, may be voted on this year.
